Fishing Boats, Key West is a watercolor painting by American landscape painter and printmaker Winslow Homer during his trip to the Bahamas between 1898 and 1999. Homer indulged himself in the details of local fishing boats during his visit to Key West, Florida, in the winter of 1903-1904, and painted Fishing Boats, Key West on December 22, 1903.
The graphite sketch of this painting is a series of quick and rough lines, and the motion lines suggest that Homer was working quickly to keep up with the man on the fishing boat.
By quickly smearing over wet watercolors and using wet paints judiciously, Fishing Boats, Key West achieves a scene of the boiling sunlight and steamy atmosphere. The glow of the water is reflected as he brushes out the heavy red strokes of the prow. The pencil marks on the canvas are visible, indicating some of the riggings on the ship (and revealing the pentagonal shape of the sloop, which the artist edited out in the background) and enlivening the rustle of the boat. In contrast, Homer painted the figures with a masterful hand without sacrificing their shape or weight. They even seem to be talking.
