A Dash for the Timber, painted by the American painter Frederic Remington in 1889, measures 122.56 cm x 213.68 cm and is currently in the Amon Carter
Museum, United States.
Remington was a war correspondent and illustrator from 1885
to 1888. He traveled to the American southwest several times to cover the
activities of the U.S. Cavalry and its pursuit of the renegade Apaches. He was
deeply influenced by the desolate landscapes of the region, filling his
sketchbooks with notes of color and observations of light. He made numerous
field sketches, took many photographs with the latest equipment, and collected
many artifacts for painting. He became acquainted with several officers who
later began to assist the artist with his collection. In 1889, Remington wrote
to the officer that he was working on "a great cowboy painting" and
needed two or three pairs of leather boots as soon as possible. He was
referring to the painting A Dash for the Timber, which was well
received at the National Academy of Design in New York and launched his career
as a great painter.
The overall painting is captivating, as the horses are
skillfully depicted, running directly toward the viewer, nostrils flaring, and
every muscle tense to the limit as they rush forward. The shadows beneath the
horses are purple, contrasting with the warm yellows and oranges of the
surrounding landscape. Interestingly, the painting has a cinematic quality that
many later Westerns borrowed from this work.
