Born in Boston and trained in Paris, American painter Edwin Lord Weeks was a distinguished expatriate painter, illustrator, photographer, writer, explorer and collector, and the first American artist to visit India. He was the son of a wealthy spice and tea merchant, growing up in a merchant’s family where he began to learn to paint and travel extensively. As a result, his works show not only paintings but also a period of travel. He moved to Paris in 1872 to study with Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme before spending two years in Oriental Morocco, where he was rewarded with a remarkable and successful exhibition of his work in Boston. He used the proceeds from the sale of paintings from this exhibition to launch his journey to India.
Since Edwin Lord Weeks did not date his completed paintings like other painters, it is impossible to tell when he created them. Sketch Two Nautch Girls was probably created during his trip to India. It shows two dark-skinned girls dressed in finery with elaborate jewelry. The painter was very detailed in his depiction of the clothing and jewelry, showing an Orientalist style. In the background of Sketch Two Nautch Girls, the artist draws simply with a rough brush and does not have a complex composition. Edwin Lord Weeks, who had published a book he wrote and illustrated, Through the Black Sea Persia and India, was awarded a knighthood in the Legion of Honor. He died in France in 1903 at the age of 54.
