One of Vincent Van Gogh's most famous paintings, Starry Night, painted in 1889 in an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France, measures 73.7 x 92.1 cm and is currently in the Museum of Modern Art.
On Christmas Eve of 1888, Van Gogh had a big fight with Gauguin, which led to the famous "Van Gogh ear-cutting" incident.
After Van Gogh's second breakdown, he went to Saint-Rémy, 25 kilometers away
from Arles, for voluntary psychiatric treatment. In Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh was
allowed to go out and sketch during the day. After spending a month in the
hospital, he painted Starry Night. The village in the painting is
what Van Gogh sees through the bars of the asylum. Starry Night was
originally a practice sketch, but it is now a world-renowned masterpiece.
As an expressive work of Post-Impressionism, Starry
Night has powerful brushstrokes that give the viewers a sense of
quietness and liveliness. The cool blue color that occupies the majority of the
painting adds a sense of tranquility to the night view. The orange color represents
happiness, and the dominant blue color with very thick brushstrokes represents
the feeling of gloom and sadness. The painting takes a man's perspective
looking out of the window, with cypress trees depicted as flames towering in
the left front, their black branches curling and swaying with the sky, like
black fire, rising up into the clouds, creating a sense of unease. Van Gogh blurred the details of the trees to some extent. The texture of the sky
resembles a spinning galaxy accompanied by countless stars, and the moon
appears as a dim lunar eclipse. The village at the bottom is drawn with
straight, thick, and short lines, expressing a sense of tranquility, which
contrasts sharply with the rough, curved lines at the top, reflecting the
artist's restless mood and a psychedelic imagery world with the strong visual
contrast and highly exaggerated distortion.
As is one of Van Gogh's most iconic works, Starry
Night engages every viewer despite their different interpretations of
