Mulberry Tree was painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, less than a year before
his death. This painting takes an ordinary tree and makes it extraordinary. In
the painting, the mulberry tree, the subject of the painting, is placed in the
foreground and dominates the center of the scene in close-up. Its branches are
strong and seem unsatisfied with this small space, as if they want to extend
beyond the canvas, full of infinite vitality. The artist imbued the tree with
powerful colors that spill unevenly from light to dark on the leaves. The
brushstrokes of the leaves are thickly layered, and the flood of life born of
tenacious resistance to nature is thus presented. Its trunk grips the ground
hard, trying to support its vast body. The blue sky in the upper right of the
canvas contrasts sharply with the orange and radical yellow color of the
mulberry tree. The ground and sky are divided by diagonal lines, thus breaking
the symmetry and monotony between the left and right of the painting and adding
a sense of dynamic.
Van Gogh strived to
place strong brush strokes in the upper half of the painting, while in the
lower half, he used simple and subtle brush strokes to account for the
undulations of the ground. Mulberry Tree is bright and
strong throughout the painting, consisting of the land, sky and mulberry tree
in three main blocks, using complementary colors to create a strong contrast of
hues. The painting is moderately expressive, without much ornamentation or
detail, demonstrating Van Gogh's ability to paint brightly and vividly.
Mulberry Tree was inspired by the trees in the garden of the asylum
Saint-Paul-de Mausole. He spent about a year in the asylum Saint-Paul-de
Mausole, where he wrote to his brother Theo about his state of mind, his new
work, and the people around him. In the letter, he admitted that his mental
state had been bad but that he felt he was getting better. Seeing all the other
patients with similar problems, he felt he was not alone.
