Van Gogh left Paris
for Arles in February 1888 and quickly fell in love with Arles. The fierce
sunlight and the blinding wheat fields drove him "crazy", and his
creativity went to its peak. Although influenced by French Impressionism and
Japanese Ukiyo-e, Van Gogh's paintings at that time were already very
characteristic, which came from his unique perspective and sensitive mind.
Van Gogh loved
nature and life, and he was not satisfied with merely "imitating the
external image of things" rationally but rather "expressing the
artist's subjective opinion and emotion through painting, giving his works an
individual and unique style." Harvest at La Crau with Montmajour
in the Background is painted in a more traditional realistic style,
with warm tones throughout, and the treatment of the scene creates a flat and
distant effect.
Van Gogh's precise
use of color and geometric composition gives the image incredible depth,
drawing the viewer's eyes from the foreground to the distant sky. Harvest
at La Crau with Montmajour in the Background shows the harmony of
colors: ochre and orange in the foreground, interspersed with clusters of green
bushes and a golden field in the middle, and green hills and blue sky in the
distance. In the yellow field, the blue wheelbarrows and red plows stand out.
In order to create a sense of depth and to give the impression that the
perspective is from a high point of view, Van Gogh allowed the sky to occupy
only one-sixth of the frame. The blue wheelbarrow forms the focal point of the
picture and is located in the center.
