In 1897, the famous English painter John Maler Collier was very moved by the story of Lady Godiva that he painted an imaginary
reproduction of the medieval myth, Lady Godiva, measuring
142.2 x 183cm, currently in the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry, UK.
According to myth, Lady Godiva was the beautiful wife of
Leofric, Earl of Mercia. At the time, Leofric was imposing higher taxes on the
citizens of Coventry, and Lady Godiva repeatedly pleaded with her husband to
reduce the tax, but he stubbornly refused. Finally, fed up with his wife's
constant pleading, Leofric announced that he'd be willing to cut taxes if she
could ride naked through the city's streets while people stayed inside without
peeking. Collier recreated this moment with his brush.
Depicted by Collier from the perspective of a passer-by,
the painting centers on Lady Godiva, who is naked with long hair draped over
her vital parts, sitting in a somewhat curled-up position. The horse is almost
covered with red cloth, revealing only the horse's head and half of its legs.
Today Lady Godiva has sculptures and portraits everywhere in Coventry and is
already the most well-known figure in the city.
