The Tree of Life, Stoclet Frieze, painted by the Austrian Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt in 1909, is one of the most famous paintings of Gustav Klimt and is currently in the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria.
The Tree of Life was created as a fresco for a restaurant and draws on ancient mosaic techniques from Mesopotamia, Greece, and Byzantium, as well as oriental tapestry and Ukiyo-e prints from Japan. All the things from nature that could evoke people's imagination of beauty were used, such as peacock feathers, gold and silver leaf, and snail shells, creating a painted mosaic painting that is the ultimate in painting and craftsmanship.
The Tree of Life is an important symbol in many theological, philosophical, and mythological contexts. It symbolizes the connection between the sky, the earth, and the underworld, and in the painting, we can clearly identify the tree trunk with its curved and rotating branches.
Gustav Klimt once said, "Art is a line around your thoughts." There are three interpretations of the tree. The first interpretation is that the swirling branches suggest the eternal and continuous nature of life, while the infinite twists and turns of the thin vines reflect the complexity of life. A second interpretation is that the tree in the painting symbolizes the connection between man and woman, which combine to give birth to the tree of life. The third interpretation is that the tree of life is a symbol of human strength, with its branches reaching for the sky, implying eternal human desire. However, regardless of the interpretation of the tree, the blackbird resting on the tree in the painting brings us another kind of inspiration. In many literary works, the blackbird is a symbol of death, so the artist wanted to remind us that everything has a beginning but also an end. Notably, two other separate works by Gustav Klimt are combined in this painting, the one on the left being Expectation, in which a woman wears an Egyptian-style dress and ornate jewelry on her head and arms. Her pose is derived from the popular dance movements of the time, reflecting Gustav Klimt's superb painting skills. On the right is Fulfillment, in which a man and woman are embracing each other in a pose very similar to The Kiss. The man's robe also has square and oval shapes. This is to illustrate the difference between masculinity and femininity. The overlapping of the two shapes suggests the mental and physical overlap of the two people in the painting.
