Battle of Trafalgar depicts one of the most significant naval battles of the 19th century, which used the few to defeat the many. The battle broke Napoleon's plans to attack England and made Britain the dominant naval power for the next 100 years.
In 1804, Napoleon was ready to build his great navy as emperor and prepare to invade England. However, since Napoleon did not know much about the navy, he sent Rear Admiral Silvestre de Villeneuve as commander, while the British commander was Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson. Napoleon's goal was to avoid the British navy and use his elite army to attack the British mainland. The French fleet played a game of cat and mouse at sea with the British navy to draw the powerful British navy away from the mainland.
On October 21, 1805, the two fleets met near Cape Trafalgar, Spain, and a decisive battle was inevitable. The battle lasted five hours, and the French West combined warship suffered a decisive blow due to the superiority of the British in command, tactics, and training. The commander-in-chief Silvestre de Villeneuve was captured, and 21 ships were taken. British commander-in-chief Viscount Nelson was also killed in this battle. After this, the French navy lost its best form and never recovered. Napoleon was so disappointed with the navy that he was forced to abandon his plan to attack the British mainland. The supremacy of the British navy was consolidated. In 2002, the BBC held a survey called "The 100 Greatest Britons", and Viscount Nelson was ranked ninth.
Louis Philippe Crepin's painting of Battle of Trafalgar, with its smoke and varying degrees of trauma to the ship's canvas, suggests that the battle has been going on for a long time as if it were the last moments of the war, so exhausted that it is not clear whether it is early morning or late afternoon. This painting records a wonderful fragment of historical imagination.
