The Knight at the Crossroads is a painting by Vasnetsov, completed in 1919. It is now in the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, and he painted it several times to meet the needs of the people who commissioned it. The earlier version was painted in 1877 and exhibited in 1878 at the exhibition of the Travelling School and is now in the St. Petersburg Museum.
There is a special genre in Russian folklore called the warrior's songs, and this image of a warrior at the crossroads is based on the warrior's songs. The Knight at the Crossroads depicts a warrior from the East on a horse, approaching a crossroads in the twilight. The stone tablet at the crossroads instructs the passerby: going forward is a dangerous road of death, going to the left will make your life good, and going to the right will fulfill your desires. Faced with the warning on the stone, the warrior, undaunted, chose to continue on his way. This painting fully expresses the brave spirit of the Russian warrior. Wearing ancient armor, carrying a bronze medallion and a spear, the warrior on a horse shows only his back, but still, one can feel the fearlessness that fills his mind. The scenery of the oil painting is wonderfully rendered: the dark clouds in the sky, the eagle flying low in the wilderness, and the skulls visible on the road ahead, filling the picture with an atmosphere of mystery and terror.
