San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk, also known as Dusk in Venice or San
Giorgio Maggiore by Twilight, is painted by the Impressionist painter Monet and is in the National Museum Cardiff of Cardiff, Wales. He depicted a view of
San Giorgio Monastery as seen from the southeast end of Venice. The domes of
Santa Maria della Salute and the mouth of the Grand Canal are faintly visible
on the right.
In 1908, at the age of 68, Monet made his only visit to
Venice. Captivated by the smog over the Thames, the atmosphere of the Normandy
coast, and the magnificent glow of the Mediterranean, Monet saw it as a city of
"indescribable beauty". Monet lived there for six months, and for a
few days in late November, Monet and his wife would take a boat trip in the
late afternoon to see the "unique and magnificent sunset in the world".
Since then, Monet has completed around 30 paintings of San Giorgio Maggiore.
In San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk, the
buildings seem to float in the background, and the church bell tower is at the
top of the painting, with the top of the tower being the darkest because it is
the furthest from the sun, leaving the viewers with a brown silhouette in the
dusk daylight. In the distance on the right side of the painting, there seems
to be a hazy, looming building hidden in the fog. The water and sky are
connected, the buildings blend with their reflection, and only blurred blocks
of color can be seen, making it impossible to tell the difference between water
and sky. Monet used very strong colors in this work, painting the sky from
cobalt blue to yellow and red, and the purple reflection casting the colors of
the sunset on the water, rendering the dreamy light and shade of sunset.
