The Walk Woman with a Parasol features Monet's first wife, Camille, and their oldest son. Camille married Monet in June 1870, and in the same year, the Franco-Prussian War broke out, causing Monet's life to become even more miserable afterward. The painting was created during this period when Monet loved to paint with Camille as his model. The painting measures 100 x 81 cm and is currently in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, United States.
His first wife, Camille, was the love of Monet's life and stayed with him through his darkest hours. Four years later, however, Camille died at the age of 32. In fact, Camille was already suffering from cancer when Monet painted this painting. About to lose someone dear to him, Monet painted with grief and mixed feelings. It can be seen in the details that several clouds are blowing in the wind on Camille's face as if she is going to leave with the wind. Later Monet probably thought of that dreamlike summer day from time to time and created two subsequent works with the same theme, but the faces are blurred, and the colors are no longer bright and clear. Obviously, Camille was irreplaceable in Monet's heart, and the days spent with her were his best memories.
In The Walk Woman with a Parasol, Camille and her eldest son are strolling in the grass on a bright sunny morning, with Camille standing against the light, holding a green parasol. In the depiction of their face and body, Monet used darker colors, leaving the face in the shadow of the parasol. The breeze ruffles her lavender dress and headscarf, giving the scene a dynamic visual effect. The shaded areas on the parasol, face, dress, and grass are in sharp contrast with the light and shadow on the dress. Delicate brushstrokes in the painting express the shifting shadows of the figures and grass. The lady holding a parasol is surrounded by sunlight, with bright white painted above and behind her parasol and a touch of yellow on her waist, which echoes with the yellow wildflowers below.
Monet connected the lady, parasol, and shadow into a deep, solid line from an angle of looking up. The lady is half-turned, the pleats twirling as she turns. The lady strolled through the picturesque fields with a pleasant smile and a sense of laziness like a noblewoman. The parasol she holds balances her movement. The gray-green tone of the parasol blends with the sky, combining the figure with the surroundings and making the figure stand out from the background. The hazy form of the little boy in the distance deepens the layering of the painting, not only highlighting the lady but also making the distant sky appear higher. Although this painting is an early work by Monet, he perfectly captured the light and feel of the moment.
