From the moment the world's maritime history sails were set, art has followed them in different ways. The sailing ship is not only a rudder in the hands of a strong and wise sailor, constantly changing and moving, but also a subject in the hands of an artist, remaining on the canvas forever. Many artists throughout history had an infinite longing for the sea and had, in one way or another, the most intimate "stories" with sailing ships. The French Impressionist artist Claude Monet is one of the most representative figures.
Sailboat at Le Petit Gennevilliers is a stunning seaside landscape painted by Monet in 1874, whose love and ambition to document the French countryside led him to paint the same scene, often at different times and under different light, in order to record what he saw with a sense of life and movement. In Sailboat at Le Petit Gennevilliers, he depicts a riverside scene in Gennevilliers, a town in the northwestern suburbs of Paris. The color tone of the whole painting is mainly light brown. The light in the sky and the reflections in the river are very much Monet's style, touched by the shimmering and swaying light on the water and bewildered by the rapidly changing richness of color, which naturally gives rise to swift, brisk brushstrokes and brilliantly mottled blocks of color. All these glorious scenes flow in perfect harmony, and the seemingly fierce and passionate sailing boat is energetic and gentle in Monet's brush, adding an enduring vitality.
Monet attached great importance to brushstrokes, as different brushstrokes can express different textures and dynamics of things. The loose brushstrokes rushed onto the canvas, bringing color to the darkest shadow area on the screen, giving color a new soul. Every part of the sky, sea and sailboat he depicts is colored with tense emotions, and the burst of sentiment seems to give the sailboat a boost of wind. His love and appreciation for nature are evident in this work.
