When Prussia defeated France in 1870, and the capital was
bloodied by the popular uprising of the Paris Commune early the following year, Monet, like other artists, moved his home to Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris, out
of fear of going to the front. Argenteuil (Red Boats) was
created during this period. Monet liked to capture the changes in light and
color on water, so he kept repeating the subject of sailing boats because it
allowed him to concentrate on the changing light and shadows on the water.
Argenteuil (Red Boats) does not have many colors, with only red, blue,
yellow, and white, but Monet was able to use the simplest colors to create a spacious
feeling. The red boat in the center of the painting contrasts sharply with the
sky and the green drifting weeds on the waters of the Seine. The summer days
add to the beauty of the Argenteuil. The sky is blue with a few white clouds,
and the early morning mist slightly dims the sky. The best parts are the
depictions of the water and the reflections of the sky and the boats, even the
ripples, capturing the dynamics of the moment vividly, showing Monet’s great
skill in painting the light.
