Most of the French impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir's works depict the leisure life of the upper-middle class. Luncheon of the Boating Party, one of the most famous works of Renoir, painted in 1881, measures 129.9 x 172.7cm, is currently housed in the Phillips Collection in Washington and depicts the social norms of the mid-to-late 19th century France. The occupations and clothing of people in the painting vary from poets and art historians to collectors and critics, reflecting the openness and tolerance of French society at the time, as restaurants welcomed patrons from all walks of life. The attire of people also reflects the fashion trends of Paris at the time, with ladies wearing elaborate and beautiful hats on their heads. It is said that no woman would go out without a hat at the time.
In Luncheon of the Boating Party, most of Renoir's friends have been identified. In the front right, Angel, one of Renoir's frequent models, turns her head toward the standing journalist Maggiolo. Painter Gustave Caillebotte, seated in a chair, stares across the table at Renoir's future wife, Aline Charigot, who coos to her beagle, and the portly son of the restaurateur, Alphonse Fournaise Jr., leans on the balcony railing and looks around. In the middle, former cavalry officer Baron Raoul Barbier, with his back to the audience, talks to a woman who rests her elbows on the railing, said to be the owner's daughter, Alphonsine Fournaise. Across the table from Barbier is the actress Ellen Andrée, sipping a glass of wine. Behind her, Charles Ephrussi, a banker and editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in a top hat, chats with Jules Laforgue, a poet, critic, and Ephrussi's personal secretary. In the upper right, Eugène-Pierre Lesterguez, an official at the Ministry of the Interior, laughs with Jeanne Samarie, the famous actress of French comedy, while Renoir's close friend, artist Paul Lotte, shakes his head. Renoir framed his friends in the painting so much that the painting was "not anecdotal, but monumental". Marjorie Phillips was inspired to write: "In the light of time it does not matter who the figures are. They are every man, all people." This masterpiece is a very tightly composed work that combines the timely figure, still life, and landscape in a single painting.
Luncheon of the Boating Party paints in a style that subverts those traditional approaches, and the whole painting is delightful and joyful, full of pleasantness and vitality. The light shines on every corner of the party, the white tablecloths are frilly, and the bottles and glasses on the tables glisten in the sunlight.
Luncheon of the Boating Party has a very intriguing composition. Depending on the position of the figures, the painting can be divided into two parts, with two people on the left being more prominent and occupying one-third of the painting and the other twelve people gathering in the remaining two-thirds, allowing the painting to achieve a visual balance.
The composition of the painting uses multiple triangles to give the different figures a connection with each other. Most of the seated figures are square triangles, creating a sense of stability, while most of the standing figures are inverted triangles, creating a sense of movement. There are obvious lines and hidden lines intersect in the painting, drawing the viewer's attention to different groups of figures.
Renoir mainly used complementary colors of blue-orange and red-green, with a small portion of yellow-purple. The various colors intertwine with each other, and the contrast between the warm and cool colors also gives the picture a color balance. Such use of color is precisely the style of Impressionism. In addition to the diversity of colors, the use of chiaroscuro also enriches the sense of volume and depth of the painting.
