One of the most
famous paintings of Impressionism, Dance at the Moulin De La Galette, also known as Bal du moulin de la
Galette, was painted by the
French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876. The painting measures 131 x 175
cm, is now in the Musée d' Orsay, France.
The Moulin Rouge in the painting is located in an
open-air lounge in the Martel Highlands of Paris. It was built at the end of
the 19th century and had a large indoor ballroom and a wooded garden. On
holiday evenings, it was filled with crowds of people drinking and dancing.
Within six months of its opening, its fame spread across Europe, and over 100
years, five generations of operators developed the Moulin Rouge into an
international brand. At that time, the Moulin Rouge gathered people from all
walks of life, and many artists enjoyed coming here to observe and sketch, Renoir being one of them. He enjoyed the free atmosphere there.
Dance at the Moulin De La Galette depicts the daily revelry of the
Parisian cabarets of the time, with most of the figures being friends of Renoir. Around the table is Estelle, the sister of Parisian star Jeanne, the
critic Rivière, and the painter Pierre-Franc Lamy. They were fashionably
dressed, men wearing high hats or straw hats and women wearing skirts held up
by iron rings at the waist. Renoir tried to record the complex scenes through
sketching, not seeking realism, but focusing more on the expression of light
and color so that the viewer could feel the liveliness and realness of the
complex scene.
The composition of Dance at the Moulin De La
Galette may seem complex, but it can be divided into two parts. Along
the striped railing at the edge of the dance floor, the image is divided into
two spaces of different densities of people, with those inside dancing and
those outside chatting freely. They are also intertwined through the overall
ambiance and the interactions between them. The woman on the dance floor is
leaning against the railing, talking to the man next to her, while a young man
on the left is listening quietly with his head tilted, seemingly captivated by
the appearance of one of the women. At the turn of the dance floor, the man in
the yellow hat leans over, looking like he is going to talk to the woman
leaning against a tree trunk. The inside and outside groups of people are
connected by these interactions, giving the viewer the feeling that they are
right there in the middle of the party. The party has enthusiastic and
oblivious people, funny and talkative people, quiet people and calm people, and
lonely people...... Like Monet's painting of landscapes, the faces of each
person in the painting are not carefully depicted according to Classicism.
Still, they are reminiscent of those familiar scenes in real life. In Dance
at the Moulin De La Galette, the sky could not be seen, and the
shimmering light shines through the leaves and sprinkles on the dancing people,
forming a staggered bright spot. The bright chandeliers, yellow hats, and
bright dresses create a sharp contrast of colors with the black clothes and
fences. The pervasive light, shadow, and colors form a melody full of dynamics
and rhythm.
