Renoir created Roses and Jasmine in a Delft Vase in 1881, when he left Paris for other parts of the world, visiting and being influenced by the works of Velázquez, Raphael and Titian in Madrid, Spain and Italy. His paintings of this period tended to be more down-to-earth depictions, using vivid, transparent colors in a unique combination of traditional and Impressionist painting.
Renoir loved roses more than any other flower, especially the red ones. Roses and Jasmine in a Delft Vase is a painting of celadon with roses and jasmine irregularly placed inside, which seem to be scattered because they are too crowded. A few bright red roses in the center catch the viewer's eye, arranged among the green leaves, and the soft light gives them a vivid life and a charming glow. Several jasmine flowers in the vase glow with light, and the artist delicately depicted their tiny petals to show their outlines. Many faded flowers and green leaves are piled up around the vase, making the canvas not monotonous and balancing the composition. The bright and vivid painting is mostly in warm tones, making it relaxing. There is a spring-like freshness to the picture, an indefinable pleasure that comes straight out of the picture, health, beauty, vitality, innocence and femininity, and even a hint of mystery is filled in the whole space. In Roses and Jasmine in a Delft Vase, Renoir applied subtle tone to the transparent layers, making these flowers more expressive, even expressionistic, showing his mastery of light.
