Pierre Auguste Renoir was a famous French Impressionist painter and sculptor, a seeker of sweet art. He was able to combine traditional painting methods with impressionist ones, and his clever use of color palettes and the interpenetration created by the juxtaposition of scenic expressions give the work an extremely harmonious appearance and a distinctive style of its own.
Umbrellas, begun in 1880 when Renoir was still indulging in Impressionist painting techniques, is a work of rough and loose brushwork, with a typically contrasting palette of light and dark. In the center of the scene, the stylishly dressed woman, representing the middle class, is holding an umbrella and looking backward toward her daughter. The woman next to her, ready to open her umbrella, is almost entirely covered. The young girl below, however, looks directly at the viewer, and the round iron ring she holds echoes the circular umbrella in the picture, giving it a naturalistic appearance, which was carefully arranged by the artist to create this harmonious geometry. On the left is the beautiful young lady, lifting her skirt on the muddy road and carrying a basket of hats for sale in the crook of her arm. She is not sheltered from the rain by an umbrella, and the man at the rear appears to be offering to cover her from the rain, but the expression on the woman's face indicates a refusal.
Depicting a busy scene in the streets of Paris when it is raining, Umbrellas, which Renoir spent five or six years on, shows two phases of his artistic career. In 1885 he lost interest in Impressionism and drew inspiration from classical art, but Renoir's use of softer, more traditional colors and the modification of the lady with the basket on the left to a simple, unadorned, plain dress suggest that she is one of the working people, a change that gives the image a deeper meaning. In addition, the dense background of people and umbrellas at the rear of the scene was added after 1885, and the brushwork is different from that of the figures on the right in the foreground. The representative of the artist's change of style is Umbrellas.
