If there was anyone in the history of art whose paintings look the happiest, it would be the French Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, who once said: "There are so many unhappy things in the world, why art can't be happy?" When Renoir was resting near the lake, he photographed a pair of people resting by the lake, an older man and a young girl. They might be relatives or friends, even Renoir could not tell, so there are no obvious features of them left in the painting.
In Near the Lake, vines and leaves hang down from above their heads, there is a railing next to them, and behind them are a boat and a lake surrounded by grass. The two seem to be talking about something while enjoying the view of the sunny lake. To make the sunlight appear brighter, Renoir used an open palette in which cooler shades of green and blue dominate the painting. For example, he used blue to paint the lake in the background, the small pond in the distance, the hills, the man's shirt, and the girl's dress. Ingeniously, Renoir also added yellow reflections to the skin and clothes of the figures. Renoir's bold use of color, combined with his magical brushwork and careful control of the depiction of light and shadow, create a warm feeling.
