El Jaleo,
painted by John Singer Sargent in 1882, measures 232 x 348 cm and is currently
in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston. In El Jaleo, a
dancer is dancing at the front, seemingly in the final gesture of a dance.
Guitarists, singers, applauders, and the dancers sitting on the wall also
seemed frozen in time. The clicking of the dancer's heels, the snapping of
fingers, the strumming of the guitar, the singing, and the applause can all be
heard through the painting, inviting viewers to join and applaud with them.
The guitar hanging on the wall expresses the guitarists' determination
not to worry about the guitar breaking and continue cheering with the spare
guitar. The dancer's shadow cast on the wall is a unique design of Sargent. The
painting's artful expression of light, space, and sound resonates with the
dance, with imaginary rhythms pulsing across the screen. The figures in the
paintings are almost one-to-one with the real ones, together with the use of
light and shadow, making the viewer confused about whether it is a painting or
a real scene.
