Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose is an iconic painting by the famous painter John Singer Sargent, who painted it between 1885 and 1886. Sargent was brought to the forefront in 1885 when he exhibited Madame X at the Paris Salon. This forced Sargent to leave France for England, where, in the London countryside, he studied a series of haystack paintings by Monet, during which he created this painting. In 1887, he exhibited Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose in England to an unexpected response, and Sargent gradually returned to the public eye in Paris with it.
Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose depicts two little girls laughing and playing with lanterns among the flowers at dusk. The viewer can see the two angelic girls standing in a wonderful setting, carefully hanging their lanterns on the branches of the flowers with innocent dreams, and the lanterns adding a warm glow to the flowers around them. The background of the painting is a clump of blooming carnations, lilies and roses, creating a dream-like environment pleasing to the eye. The girls look down at the candle flame in the lantern, and soft flames put a warm light on their faces, which are lively and healthy. The two contrasting and complementary tones of warm and cold in this painting form a picture that is both warm and romantic. It is as if the viewer can feel how nature, mind and purity, man and heaven and earth, are harmoniously blended.
Because the light at twilight is so fleeting, Sargent started painting as soon as it was the time each day, for a few minutes, to capture the full light of the moment. He painted from September to November. In late autumn, the original flowers faded, and he had to replace them with artificial flowers to continue painting. The two girls in Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose are the daughters of the illustrator Frederick Barnard, a friend of Sargent.
