A Boating Party was painted by John Singer Sargent, an American expatriate artist, during a late summer holiday in Avon. Sargent is considered "the leading portraitist of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury and had created around 900 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolor paintings, and countless sketches. His oeuvre documents his travels around the world, including Venice, Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida.
During the extended vacation in Avon with Sargent's sister Violet and friends Paul and Alice Helleu, he experimented with impressionistic compositions and techniques. The unfinished background of A Boating Party suggests that he has not yet mastered the use of the broken brush. However, his confidence is evident in the placement of the figures, the reflections in the water, and the asymmetrical organization of the boat. With a playful sense of photographic cropping, Sargent secured the flat red punt with lanky Paul Heller's legs to keep it from slipping out of the picture.
