Edouard Manet was one of the founding fathers of nineteenth-century Impressionism and sought lifelong recognition at the official Paris salons. Born into a wealthy family, at first, his parents did not support his artistic career and wanted their son to study law or become a naval officer, but Manet had little interest in society or politics. Over time, they saw Manet’s potential and chose to support him.
Manet often wandered into cafes, racecourses, pleasure halls, and city streets. These scenes not only brought him novel subjects but also served as a cohesive and observant look at the times. The Bar at the Folies Bergere, one of Manet’s last paintings, was painted in 1882. He died a year after it was painted. The painting depicts a scene from the playroom of the goddess in a Parisian nightclub. Behind the waitress in the painting is a large mirror, in which most of the scene appears. The scene reflected in the mirror is cheerful and lively modern life, symbolizing the Parisian nightlife of the time. You can see a pair of green feet in the top left-hand corner of the painting, where a trapeze artist from an acrobatic troupe performs for the restaurant patrons. On the right side of the picture, the reflection in the mirror captures the waitress greeting his customers, but in the middle of the painting, the waitress is sad and weary. She looks at the viewer with sad and vacant eyes, a great contrast to the background.
In fact, the hilarity and joy reflected in the mirror is only a superficial representation of Parisian life at the time, while the emptiness and sadness shown by the waitress is the real society. The characters in Manet’s paintings, whether they are peddlers, waitresses, or ordinary people, are all sincere and elegant. The painter did not deliberately glorify them because the elegance of the people genuinely moved him, and Manet focused on the structure of the painting in combination with the colors, in addition to the impressionistic consideration of light, which made the whole painting look fantastic.
