Song of the Angels (La Vierge
aux anges) is a canvas oil painting by the French Academic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1881 and is now in the Forest Lawn Museum, USA. Bouguereau was a leading figure in French Academicism in the mid-to-late 19th
century. After his death, however, Bouguereau was vilified, and his artistic
status dropped dramatically, to the point of being removed from the history of
19th-century European art. It was not until 1984 that a major retrospective of Bouguereau's work was held at the Grand Palais in Paris, where his masterful
and beautiful images stunned France and the world.
In 1881, Bouguereau completed his major work, Song
of the Angels, which he had actually conceived in 1879. Angels, called
"angelos" in Greek, are messengers of God who spread goodness,
beauty, integrity, and holiness in the world on behalf of God while protecting
people from the devil. Song of the Angels paints a biblical
scene of three angels playing music for the sleeping Virgin and Child. The
three angels, dressed in white, each holding a xylophone, are lithe and
graceful, playing the xylophone while looking intently at the Virgin and the
Child (Jesus) in her arms, sending them good wishes and performing their
angelic duties. The graceful and slender figure shows the rhythmic beauty of
the woman, her white fingers stroking the strings, her clear eyes showing
pureness and sincerity.
In Song of the Angels, the sleeping
Virgin's head wrapped in a white scarf and the angel's white dress are equally
pure, while the dress is deep and mysterious with Bouguereau's beloved blue
pigment. The Virgin Mary sits comfortably on the stone bench, and the whole painting
is filled with a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. The painting adopts a
circular composition, with two angels in front gazing lovingly at the Virgin,
combining the left and right semicircles. The Virgin sits on the column of the
ancient Greek temple, reflecting Bouguereau's love and admiration for Classicism.
Although this painting is based on mythology, it expresses Bouguereau's aesthetic sentiments to create an idealized and beautiful realm with a very realistic approach, ferrying people to the beautiful and sacred Neverland, giving the viewer a pure visual enjoyment.
