The French master of classical realism, William Adolphe Bouguereau, was one of the most popular and successful painters of the 19th century, alongside Ingres, Leighton and Gérôme. La Vierge au Lys (The Virgin of the Lilies) was painted by Bouguereau in 1899 and is now owned by a private owner.
Bouguereau's artistic legacy is very rich, but for most of the 20th century, he was neglected, disparaged, and even considered conservative and outdated alongside Academism. Only in recent decades that many painters began to study orthodox classical painting, and his works have once again become the best examples for many. At the same time, his paintings have regained recognition in the art market, fetching millions of dollars at auctions at Sotheby's and Christie's.
Bouguereau had depicted the Virgin and Child several times in his works, but two versions of it provide an interesting contrast. The two paintings are similar in many ways but different in their symbolism. They are La Vierge au Lys (The Virgin of the Lilies) and The Madonna of the Roses from 1903. Both are 4:3 paintings and solely depict the Virgin Mary and child.
The Virgin Mary in La Vierge au Lys (The Virgin of the Lilies) is dressed in black with downcast eyes. She looks down with humility and restraint and hugs the baby Jesus tightly to her chest. A faint sadness can be seen in the mother's expression, emphasized by the black shawl. The hands of the Holy Child stretch out in the direction of the viewer, and he looks directly at the viewer, symbolizing his devotion to humanity. At the bottom of the canvas, there are lilies on the left and right sides, which bring out the figures.
The white lily symbolizes motherhood, a meaning that dates back to ancient Greece and has long been associated with the Annunciation and the Assumption of the Virgin. In the Annunciation, the archangel Gabriel appeared before Mary and told her that she was about to become the mother of Christ. In the Assumption, Mary's body ascended to heaven, and the empty tomb was scattered with white lilies.
Although there is some disagreement in interpretation, generally, the stem of the lily symbolizes Mary's inner religious beliefs, the petals symbolize her chastity, the fragrance of the flower symbolizes her divinity, and the leaves symbolize her humility.
