A Soul Brought to Heaven by William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1878 is a tribute to the
memory of his late wife and young son. The biblical theme of this painting
reproduces Raphael's way of painting, which Bouguereau presented with beauty
beyond reality. The dead woman seems to be sleeping, and instead of a hint of
grief on her face, an atmosphere of tranquility envelops her. A cluster of
flowers is placed on her body, and these flowers float down as she rises,
adding a bit of sadness and dismay to the picture. The two angels next to her
are together, encircling her body and flying toward the sky. The three figures
in the painting are apparent in a cloud of mist. In the upper right corner of
the canvas, there is an angel in the shape of a mist guiding them, with a
golden light ahead. The whole painting gives a beautiful and pure visual
pleasure, and the figures have a natural brilliance despite the ideal model of
the academy.
In 1875, Bouguereau's 16-year-old son Georges died, and in the spring of 1877, his wife
Nelly and eight-month-old son died, leaving his family devastated by one bad
news after another. Bouguereau's painful shock was immense. The death of his
loved ones made him devote himself to his art, pouring his grief over the loss
of his wife and son onto paint and canvas, working day and night to heal the
pain, and dedicating his artworks to the memory of his loved ones. In A
Soul Brought to Heaven, the artist expressed his thoughts and feelings of
remembrance for his deceased loved ones.
