The Fighting Temeraire, tugged to her last Berth to be
broken up, painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in
1838, measures 91 x 122 cm, and is currently in the National Gallery, London,
UK. Armed with 98 guns, the Temeraire contributed to Nelson's victory at the
Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The ship was later known as "The Fighting
Temeraire". Joseph Mallord William Turner recreated the scene to express
his patriotic fervor.
In bright and rich tones, the painting depicts the
setting sun and the sky reaching the water, bringing out the silhouettes of
ships, and setting a melancholy tone of the painting. In the left center of the
painting is the tall ancient battleship, being dragged by a motorboat and
slowly returning home. The bright colors of blue, pink, red, and yellow in the
painting are intended to create a natural boundary between the two ships and
the sinking sunset, which is a metaphor for the shift between the old and new
eras.
William Turner had found a means of expression that
transcends realism, depicting natural forms such as sunlight, water vapor, and
wave fog in an exquisite manner. He also painted emotions such as joy, anger
and sadness in this work. This landscape truly represents the changing colors
of sunlight and air and dramatically reflects a side of history.
