The Grand Canal, Venice was created by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1835,
capturing a scene of the busy Grand Canal in Venice. Joseph Mallord William Turner made three trips to Venice in 1819, 1833, and 1840. These brief trips
profoundly shaped his art.
In The
Grand Canal, Venice, the building on the left is a corner of Santa Maria
della Salute. On the right side of the painting is the Campo del Traghetto of
Santa Maria del Giglio. Turner deliberately increased the height of the clock
tower on the left and added a building in the distance on the right side of the
painting, making the composition more layered and spacious. In the middle of
the canvas, many boats are sailing in the canals, full of movement and the
style of Venice. The sky is very clean, and the thick white clouds add calmness
to the scene. The water reveals calmness, and the figures are clearly reflected
in it. The artist delicately depicted the subtle relationship between light and
color, and there is a legacy of tradition that gives the whole painting a
strong sense of gravity.
