The Slave Ship is a work by British painter Joseph Mallord
William Turner in 1840 and is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It was a
painting from the Industrial Revolution when many new institutions emerged in
society, and Turner was the first painter to use color directly to appeal to
emotion.
One of the exhibits
at the Royal Academy of Arts in May 1840 was the work The Slave Ship,
which was later considered one of the highest peaks in the history of British
painting by the 65-year-old William Turner. At the time, this work was heavily
criticized by all walks of life as a farce in the kitchen, a hollow work of
nothing. Turner had hoped that people would weep and cry over the imagined
scene of slaves being brutally murdered at sea, but the truth was that the work
was considered utter nonsense and even disgusting.
Although all
critics agree that the slave ship was given less weight in the painting due to
Turner's disdain for the rules of art making, the main subject of the work, the
three masts, is placed in the middle of the background, and the churning storm
clouds and the sea occupy the majority of the canvas. But in fact, it is
Turner's greatest success due to the meticulous spatial layout. The fury of red
and gold makes the reality of the brutal slave trade as poetic as it is moving.
The Slave Ship shows a raging sea, with the morning sun reflecting off
the surface particularly harshly. The waves in the close-up impact a group of
floating objects, and the dead fish and the corpses of slaves are mixed with
the waves, and the slave ship has gradually drifted away. William Turner's
emphasis in the painting is on sunlight and water vapor, which shows his
preference for depicting unconquerable natural forces.
In this painting,
the painter perceived a particular essence of nature, namely the mystery of the
changing light and color. Turner intentionally blended the shocking events with
the nature of the sea to form a romantic passion. Orange, lemon yellow, rose
and purple is woven into the symphony of color in this painting. Ruskin, a
contemporary of Turner, said of Turner's landscapes: "If only one painting
were to prove that Turner's art is immortal, this would be the one to choose, The
Slave Ship."
