Boreas, named after the Greek god of the north wind, was created in 1903 by the British Neo-Classical and Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse. Unfortunately, this Waterhouse's favorite painting had been missing for almost a century. It re-emerged in the middle of the 1990s for putting up for sale, creating a sensation in the art community, and was later bought privately and never seen again.
Boreas depicts
a young girl walking through flowers in a tearing wind. Her cloak is blown up
by the wind, soft and elegant, bringing out the young and beautiful moment of
the girl. The whole scene has the beauty of Classicism and accurate depictions
of the light of Impressionism. The Royal Academy described the subject of the
painting as: "In wind-blown draperies of slate-color and blue, a girl
passes through a spring landscape accented by pink blossom and daffodils."
Boreas captures the invisible, uncatchable wind and is named as such. The colors are predominantly blue and green: dark green trees and low-flying bluebirds are tilted by the wind, and the sky at the top left corner is full of silver-white clouds. The girl wears a light blue cloak that ruffles naturally and forms a dynamic contrast with the dark blue dress. The semi-circular cloak sets off her white face and arms, giving her a sense of warm beauty. The girl walks through the meadow dotted with pink flowers and daffodils, her cloak being blown from behind by the wind, forming a dynamic, curved streamer. She presses her cloak, which was already wrapped around her hair, for fear of being blown away. In such a gale, the girl is graceful and dynamic, with drooping cheeks and a stern expression, with charming and elegant beauty.
