Hylas and the Nymphs, painted by the English Neoclassical and Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse in 1896, measures 131.1 x 197.5 cm and is currently in Manchester Art Gallery, U.K. John William Waterhouse is known for his vividly colored and mysterious paintings of female figures from classical mythology and legend.
Hylas and the Nymphs is based on the Greek mythology of the heroes on the ship Argo in search of a rare treasure, the Golden Fleece. On their way to rest, the hero Hylas volunteered to find water. He then found a pond full of water lilies, and just as he was bending over to draw water, seven beautiful nymphs emerged from under the lotus leaves. The nymphs were amazed at his handsomeness and wished to keep him with them forever. One of the nymphs, Dryope, stretched out her white arms to hold Hylas, another pulled his clothes, and another lured him with pearls, trying to drag Hylas to the middle of the water. Hylas sensed that something was wrong and called out for help, but when his friend Polyphemus came to the water's edge, all he saw was a bronze water jar. Hercules heard the sad news of Hylas' death and ran wildly to the water's edge, but the water had long since regained its calm. He ran around in the woods screaming Hylas' name and soon disappeared. The heroes on the Argo waited for a day and did not see him return, so they had to continue their voyage.
In Waterhouse's portrayal, the allure of this beautiful boy is portrayed as irresistible. Instead of highlighting the hero, Hylas, Waterhouse only painted his side face in shades and carefully depicted each of the nymphs around Hylas. Waterhouse deliberately used this strong character contrast to imply Hylas' tragic fate. In Hylas and the Nymphs, the white bodies of the nymphs peek out from the water lilies. There is a fresh and mysterious scent in the moist air. Water nymphs are a group of nymphs who live in the water, such as clear springs and streams, pure and carefree. They are beautifully depicted in the painting, untouched by silt. Dryope, in particular, is charming, and her sincere, searing eyes are heartwarming. Looking closely at the painting, the turquoise lake, the beautiful water nymphs, and the seemingly haphazard but carefully arranged plants allow the poetry to flow slowly through the picture. In art history, painters are very fond of depicting the subject of Hylas and the Nymphs, but only this version by English painter John William Waterhouse is the most classic.
