A Mermaid,
a painting by Waterhouse in 1900, is a representative work of Aestheticism and
was submitted after Waterhouse entered the Royal Academy as a scholar. In the
painting, a mermaid with a human upper body and a fishtail sits alone on the
reef and seaweed, her tail very soft and coiled at her side. Her long
reddish-brown hair falls between her thighs, setting off her fairer skin. She
holds a comb in one hand to comb through the stirred hair, and the other hand
gently cooperates. Her face is exquisite: deep eyes, a straight nose. Her mouth
is slightly open as if she is singing casually. At the top of the reef sits a
plate-like shell with strings of crystal pearls. Some believe they are formed
from the tears of dead sailors, which restores the story of the mermaid
destroying the sailors with their songs.
Waterhouse is very
fond of depicting characters from mythology and is interested in the dark myth
of the mermaid as a witch. Generally regarded as evil, the Siren is a famous
creature in Greek mythology, usually shown as a mermaid or part bird. They
often wandered among the rocks or ships in the sea, using their singing voice
to make the passing sailors lose their attention and sink their ships. In Waterhouse's work, the mermaid is often portrayed as a charming and solitary
figure, albeit with a fishtail, as is the case with this painting, A
Mermaid.
