Unlike most of Waterhouse's other works, the painting The Soul of the Rose is not taken from a famous or old love story; rather, there is no particular story to the painting, which is simply a study of a woman in a garden. The woman in the painting is gently holding her left hand on a wall in front of her, her right hand touching a rose, and is gently sniffing its fragrance. Her expression, immersed in the scent of the rose, and the simultaneous feelings of distress, longing, and melancholy that emerge from her face are capable of arousing the viewer's imagination. The rose must have an enchanting fragrance.
Waterhouse's use of this warm mix of pinks, oranges, and browns on the rose evokes a soft sweetness, as if a strong rose scent lingers between the viewer and the painting, with a subtle sense of romantic obsession. The woman fits perfectly into Waterhouse's brushwork's slender, pale elegance. The gesture of the woman with her hands slightly raised at the elbows, stroking the flowers, harmonizes the relaxation of her upper body with the exuberance of her own charisma and reveals her desire for love.
