John William Waterhouse, an outstanding English painter, used vivid colors and a mysterious painting style to depict female figures in classical myths and legends, forming his own unique style. He was a representative of Neo-Classical and Pre-Raphaelite painters. Pandora depicts a beautiful woman half-kneeling and opening a box, from the edge of which we can faintly see a gush of black smoke as if there is an omen of bad luck. The theme of the painting is based on ancient Greek and Roman mythology. Prometheus, the son of the Titans, stole fire from the sky and gave it to humanity. This act angered Zeus, and he decided to punish humans with disasters to offset the great benefits of fire. Zeus first ordered Hephaestus, the god of fire, to mix water and soil into the mud to make a woman and then ordered Aphrodite, the god of love and beauty, to give her a beautiful face. He then ordered Athena, the goddess of wisdom, to teach her to be a woman with ingenuity. He also made the woman gifted in languages. Zeus named her Pandora, a woman of all the gods' virtues.
Zeus gave Pandora a magic box when she came down to the human world, telling Pandora that when she seduced the first man and married him, she would open the box, and the punishment of humanity would appear. Athena could not bear to see the painful punishment of human beings, so she secretly put the seed called "hope" in the box. Pandora seduced Prometheus's younger brother Epimetheus, and on their wedding night, she opened the magic box full of disasters. For a time, plagues, diseases, greed, jealousy, and other disasters spread like black smoke to the world. Just as the only good thing in the box, hope, was about to fly out of the box, the insidious Pandora slammed the box shut again, and hope stayed at the bottom of the box. "Pandora" then became a synonym for "the purveyor of all disasters."
