The Lady of Shalott, one of the most recognizable works by the Pre-Raphaelite English painter John William Waterhouse, was painted in 1888, measures 153 x 15.24 cm, and is currently in the Tate Britain, London, UK.
The painting is based on a narrative poem by the famous English poet Alfred Tennyson, published in 1883.
From the poem:
And down the river's dim expanse
Like some bold seer in a trance,
Seeing all his own mischance
With glassy countenance
Did she look to Camelot.
And at the closing of the day
She loosed the chain, and down she lay;
The broad stream bore her far away,
The Lady of Shalott.
The poem comes from the legend of "King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table." It tells the story of a beautiful woman named Shalott who was imprisoned in a tower on a lonely island. She was cursed by magic and could only see the outside world in a mirror, so she sat at a loom all day to weave the world she saw in the mirror into silk. One day Shalott saw the knight Lancelot from the mirror, and she could not resist her love for him and left the loom to look out the window. The curse was revealed when she saw the real world with her own eyes: the mirror shattered, the loom broke, and she was entangled in the silk thread. After breaking free from the entanglement, she still resolutely took a boat with Shalott's name engraved on it to find Lancelot, but the boat carried her down the water and into a silent death. When Lancelot saw her body, he could not help but marvel at her beauty.
John William Waterhouse depicts Shalott in the last moments of her life: as she releases the chains on the boat, she opens her mouth and sings the last song of her life. The painting suggests that she is close to death, with a cross in front of her and three candles beside her, two of which have been blown out. Candles are often used to symbolize life, and the two blown-out candles foreshadow the imminent end of her life.
Waterhouse had filled the empty pages of his manus of Tennyson's poems with sketches. The poem itself has a clear sense of the image. The most powerful feature of the painting is that it conveys the poetic image faithfully and is also a piece of outdoor landscape painting. Waterhouse was influenced by the plein-air painting of French Impressionism, so his work requires the viewer to have the ability to connect what we think with the romantic imagery of literature, from Homer to Tennyson.
