Wassily Kandinsky had synesthesia, and he could hear colors very clearly, an effect that had a significant impact on his art. He named his paintings improvisation and compositions as if they were not paintings but musical works. The composition series explores Kandinsky's musical metaphors and presents complex rhythmic works with a strong orchestral flavor.
Composition VII, a painting from 1913, is arguably the pinnacle of Kandinsky's artwork. The main theme of the painting is the intersection of ovals with irregular rectangles, which feel like a swirl of colors and shapes around a center. Kandinsky's book, Concerning the Spiritual in Art, stated, "Color directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposively, to cause vibrations in the soul."
Composition VII is like a musical rhapsody. The picture is full of random and chaotic patterns, with rich colors spread all around. In the middle of the painting, there is an irregular circle, mercilessly cut by sharp lines, surrounded by beautiful colors that blossom like fireworks. Black and red create manic chaos, while white and pink are soft and quiet, intricate and breathtaking. It is as if viewers actually "hear" the sound of the artist's brushstrokes and colors, as the intense colors and strange shapes clash like percussion, and the whole picture is like a symphony orchestra, finding order in the chaos.
Before starting to paint Composition VII, Kandinsky made more than 30 drafts in watercolor and oil paint. After this lengthy preliminary work, the work itself took only four days to create.
