In the fall of
1908, Wassily Kandinsky's work entered a new phase. Kandinsky painted
landscapes in a highly stylized manner, and in Autumn in Bavaria,
he pushed further into pure abstraction. The visual elements of the scene are
recognizable in Autumn in Bavaria, with beech trees on the right
side of the sidewalk, spruce and a host of other evergreens above a short
retaining wall on the other side and a church with a steeple clearly visible in
the background.
In Kandinsky's
paintings, there is an element of musicality, like the presence of a musical
version, and he believed that the existing way of painting could not express
his inner feelings. He believed that a pure painting should be as fluid as
music when looking at it and that when a painting goes from figurative to
abstract, painting alone is not acceptable to everyone, and a new style of
painting should have new standards of appreciation. Kandinsky began to borrow musical
titles to suggest his underlying intentions, such as composition, improvisation
and lyricism. Similar to music, through lines, color, space and movement,
paintings convey the artist's sensual consciousness, no longer referring to
natural objects.
