Jacques Louis David was a famous French painter and the founder of Neoclassicism. The Death of Socrates was commissioned to Jacques Louis David by a wealthy member of the Paris Parliament in 1786. The painting depicts a thrilling moment in which the philosopher Socrates died, telling the classic story of a man who fought against unjust authority. When Socrates faced death, he was calm and fearless for what he believed in. Although this is the scene of his death, it is also the moment of his highlight. In the painting, where the light shines, Socrates, dressed in white, is sitting on the bed, holding up his powerful left hand, expounding his views and opinions to his pupils. Through gestures and expressions, David carefully portrayed Socrates in the final moments of his life. The young man holding the cup turns his head away and shields his eyes with his hand, unable to bear to look at it all.
There is not a single person in the scene, except Socrates, who does not mourn this tragedy. Socrates' pupils, some in deep sorrow, some seemingly unwilling to accept this reality, are extremely sad, adding tragedy to the whole scene. At their feet, there are open shackles and scattered hand scrolls thrown, which are enough to reflect the spirit of Socrates' struggle for truth. The painter used Neoclassical techniques to give the picture a gritty, solemn and cold artistic effect. The Death of Socrates, created in 1787, before the French Revolution, had a major impact on the later "fanatical" French Revolution.
