Saint Michael and the Dragon, currently in the Louvre, is a work by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael for Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, and the painting was completed on the back of a draught board in 1504 or 1505. Saint Michael and the Dragon is also called the little St. Michael to be distinguished from Raphael's later work of the same theme, Saint Michael Trampling the Dragon.
Michael (Latin: Michael or Míchaël) is an archangel in Christianity, and the name Michael is a Hebrew word meaning "who is like God." He is the appointed guardian of the Garden of Eden and the only angel mentioned in the Bible with the title of the archangel.
Saint Michael and the Dragon depicts the Archangel Michael fighting the devils of hell while the cursed men suffer behind him. In the center of the painting, Archangel Michael stands over the neck of the devil Satan as he raises his sword in preparation for his beheading. The angel's spread wings, dangling right leg and wind-blown cloak under his armor give a strong sense of presence as if the angel has just flown down from heaven to deliver a fatal blow to the devil wrapped around his leg. The background is a barren hellscape with devils and suffering sinners. These sinners suggest that Raphael may have referenced Dante's Inferno.
