Mona Lisa, currently in the Musée du Louvre, France, is the highest artistic achievement of the Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the three giants of the High Renaissance, who insisted on scientific exploration and adhered to humanism and aesthetics.
Arguably the most famous oil painting in the world and
the first half-length portrait painting in Italy, very few other works have
been studied or discussed as often as Mona Lisa has. Painted on a 77 x
53 cm black poplar panel, Mona Lisa depicts a woman with a slightly
smiling expression that is sometimes referred to as a "mysterious
smile." She is seated with folded hands on the armrests, presenting her
body from head to waist, which differs from earlier portraits that depict only
the head and upper body, cut off at the chest. Mona Lisa provides
a new composition for future painters and photographers.
Mona Lisa's smile is mysterious because it is very
puzzling and has many interpretations. Some think her smile is very charming,
some think it is a mocking smile, and some think she is not smiling but
gloating. If we cover one side of her mouth and look at the other, we see a
smile on the right, a sad expression on the left, and no smile on the lips
alone. To paint her smile, Da Vinci used sfumato, one of the canonical painting
modes of the Renaissance, and has very smooth transitions between colors and
blurry boundary lines, making her smile appears very soft, round, and hazy,
like floating in the fog.
The technique of Mona Lisa seems simple,
but it is incredibly complicated. Since there are no traces of brushes on the
painting, scientists assume that Da Vinci painted with paint on his fingers.
The entire painting incorporates a total of 40 layers of extremely thin oil
paint, each layer only 1/50th the diameter of a hair, almost using a shadow to
represent the Mona Lisa's smile. Mona Lisa's smile appears to be very
vague because of this. This, combined with the harmonies of figure and
background, makes Mona Lisa one of the most famous and
analyzed paintings in history. Mona Lisa is also the first
portrait in which the person is painted in front of an imaginary background. It
is worth noting that the scenery behind is not symmetrical, with the left being
significantly lower than the right. Some critics believe that this indicates
that the left part of the background was added later.
Da Vinci breaks traditional composition by using a pyramidal structure to place the woman simply and fully in the painting. Her folded hands form the four corners of the pyramid. Her chest, neck, face, and hands softly glow. The use of sfumato shows the fullness and softness of the flesh. The figure has a blurry contour line, making it look like it blends into the background. The corners of the eyes and mouth gradually blend into the soft shadows, creating a subtle artistic effect, which greatly enriches the information of the painting.
