Birth of Venus (La Nascita di Venere), painted in 1487, is an oil painting created by Sandro
Botticelli for a distant brother of the Medici family, rulers of Florence. This
painting is the most important depiction of the nude since the classical era.
It shows the birth of Venus, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, from the
sea.
In the center of
the painting, the newborn goddess Venus stands naked in a giant scallop shell,
moving as if she is an impeccable sculpture. Her orange-colored curls add to
the fairness and delicacy of her skin, and her expression is very confused and
delicate, completely immersed in her inner world. This painting shows that the
goddess came to this earth full of misery with melancholy. This state of her
mind is a reflection of the artist's own attitude towards reality. The infinite
blue sea and sky, which happen to open up around her, highlight the figure of
Venus. On the left, Zephyr, the god of the west wind, puffs out his mouth and
blows Venus heavily towards the shore. Entwined with the god of the west wind

flowers. Many pink roses are sprinkled around her, seemingly welcoming the
Birth of Venus. On the right side of the canvas, the Hora of Spring is waiting
on the shore with her red embroidered cloak open, ready to dress Venus in a new
costume.
Botticelli depicted
the physical beauty of the figures with fluid and rhythmic lines. He used a
meticulous rhythm of lines to express the volume of the form, giving the body a
sense of shallow relief and making it ideal for decorative purposes. The image
