Painted in 1633 by Rembrandt Van Rijn, one of the greatest Dutch Golden Age painters of the 17th century, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee was unfortunately stolen, along with 12 other world-class paintings, by two thieves, on March 18, 1990. The two thieves posed as Police officers and invaded the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, one of the top private art museums in Boston, and all the works stolen by them remain missing, creating incalculable damage to the art community. The empty frame left behind when the painting was stolen still hangs in its original location.
Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee recreates a biblical scene from the
fourth chapter of the Gospel of Mark, of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of
Galilee. This painting is the only one by Rembrandt with a nautical theme. As
the bible mentions, Jesus and his disciples were on a boat crossing the sea to
Gerasenes, and they were caught in a storm that frightened the disciples.
People were baffled: why would they be in this situation with Jesus in the same
boat with them? When Jesus was awakened by the disciples and rose to calm the
storm, he said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no
faith?" For they had seen many miracles by Jesus and were not these enough
to prove that Jesus is the mighty Christ? But they were too scared to remember
the existence of Jesus even though there was nothing to be afraid of with Jesus
by their side. Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee was
inspired by the stormy seas Rembrandt encountered as a young man moving to
Amsterdam on a sailboat.
Rembrandt's use of Shadows and light enhances the contrast between light and shade, and the waves in the highlighted area provide an enticing contrast to the waves in the shadow, adding more meaning to the painting. In his view, if there are no moral constraints and religious beliefs, then by the beauty and evil of human nature, life is undoubtedly full of hardships. Rembrandt's use of light is impressive, as he flexibly handles light and shade in complex pictures, using light to enhance the main parts of the painting while allowing the light in the secondary parts to diminish. Rembrandt's use of light is a major characteristic of his painting style and adds a strong dramatic feel to his works.
