The most crucial work of Rembrandt's later years and one
of his most famous paintings, The Return of the Prodigal Son, was
completed by Rembrandt Van Rijn in 1668, the year before his death and the year
after his only son died. The painting measures 262 x 205 cm and is currently in
the collection of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
Rembrandt has long been interested in the biblical story
of the prodigal son. The Bible tells the story of the prodigal son who ran away
from home with his inheritance, spent all his money, and had to herd pigs for a
living, so he returned home penniless and asked his father's forgiveness.
When his father saw him from afar, he took pity on him
immediately, ran to him without giving the son a chance to remorse, threw his
arms around the son's neck, and kissed him fervently. To celebrate the younger
son's return, the father killed the fattened calf, dressed the son in a fine
robe, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet. The older son was angry
and jealous to see his father treating the impudent younger son so favorably
while he had been faithful and had not been rewarded. The father comforted him,
"But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother,
was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found."
In The Return of the
Prodigal Son, the son, barefoot
and wrapped in rags, kneels before his father and buries his head in his arms.
The father is so old that his weak eyesight no longer helps him recognize the
son before him. The father bends down and places his hand on his son's
shoulder, his arm around the son's head in a gesture of forgiveness and
welcome.
Rembrandt used bright red and warm gold to paint the two
figures against the dark background with a tall doorway barely visible at the
back. The eldest son is the bystander on the right, standing like a statue
and watching from the sidelines. Judging by his cold expression, he still has
not forgiven his brother. The others are painted in the shadow, blending with
the background, adding to the seriousness of the scene. Rembrandt used his
unique technique, piling up thick oil paint with strong brush strokes to
enhance the heaviness and vicissitudes of the scene. The painting is enormous,
and as we stood back, we were overwhelmed by the majesty of the entire work.
