The Night Watch, one of the world's most famous paintings, was created by Rembrandt Van Rijn in 1642 and measures 363 × 437 cm. The painting is a group
portrait of Captain Banninck Cocq and seventeen members of his Kloveniers,
depicting city guards in action. Rembrandt depicted the guards in an unusual
way. Instead of lining up neatly or sitting at their annual feast, he recorded
the moment when a group of guards was just beginning to move, about to depart.
In The
Night Watch, The ambitious Captain Banninck Cocq is at the center of the
painting, wearing a black uniform befitting his status and draped in a red
ribbon. Beside him is the vice Captain, much more fancifully dressed, holding
his weapon in his left hand and his right hand crossed. Behind them, the
militia is in full dress, each slowly marching in a different direction, making
various movements. Another focal point of the painting is the little girl in
the gold dress, to which Rembrandt had given a strong light source, making her
even more unique and contrasting from the masculine group. She has a chicken
hanging from her belt, with its upside-down claws clearly visible. The bird's
claw is the symbol or emblem of the militia, evolving from the medieval eagle's
claw. The identity of the little girl remains unknown.
The Night Watch is a huge group portrait in which the figures are almost
life-size. It demonstrates the artist's dramatic use of light and shadow. Rembrandt broke the mold of group portraiture by handling the composition and
the figures with realism, vividness and strong variations in light and
darkness. However, the painting did not satisfy the commissioners, as the cost
of group portraits at the time was shared equally by the people in the
painting, and other people who had paid as much for the painting were naturally
unhappy, and they jointly sued Rembrandt in court. Since then, Rembrandt's
reputation had suffered, and few people came back to him for portraits.
