Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the European painters of the art of Baroque paintings, on a par with many of the giants of the Italian Renaissance. He painted many subjects, specializing in portraits, landscapes, customs, religious, and historical paintings. His era is known as the Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch science, art, and commerce reached their peak.
Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp measures 169.5 x 216.5 cm and was commissioned by the seven members of the Surgeon's Guild and Dr. Tulp. In the painting, Dr. Tulp dissects a cadaver's forearm lying on a bed. His right hand is holding forceps to rip the flesh from the corpse's hand, and his left hand is slightly bent, showing the muscles and tendons of the arm that control the movement of the hand as the seven surgeons surround the corpse and are listening intently to the lesson. Each figure has a very vivid, realistic expression, all reacting accordingly to what they were seeing. Some lean down with great interest to look at the arm being dissected, some read anatomy books, and some stare at the audience. The cadaver in Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp is the composition's focal point, with the light clearly brighter than the rest, as if it were a flashlight shining on the area. The visual effect is as if the corpse is standing on a black stage, with a strong light hitting his body. Rembrandt's use of light is impressive, using it skillfully to intensify the main parts of the painting while allowing the darker parts to weaken and dissolve the secondary parts. Rembrandt's light is a common and well-used light, using a special triangle of three-dimensional light to outline the silhouette of the figure, leaving the rest of the painting hidden in the light and darkness, giving a sense of stability and dignity.
