Paul Cézanne is a famous French painter and the master of Post-Impressionism. Since the end of the 19th century, he has been praised as the father of new art. As a pioneer of modern art, modern Western painters call him the father of modern art and the father of modeling or modern painting.
For most of his life, Paul Cézanne mainly painted landscape paintings. In his later years, he lived in his native Aix, during which time he sketched in many places. For depicting landscapes, Cézanne kept the valuable lessons he had learned from Impressionism. A landscape painted in a studio would never be as good as one painted outdoors. In his later years, Cézanne de-emphasized the basic effects of sketching, such as three-dimensionality and perspective, in his work, but the strong contour lines still give the impression of geometry.
A Bend in the Road, painted by Cézanne in 1900, presents a weak sense of space, with both close and distant objects drawn into the same plane in terms of clarity. This approach not only distances itself from traditional expression techniques but also leaves room for expression in the composition of the picture. In A Bend in the Road, Cézanne overlaps the mountain wall and the woods in front of it, eliminating the need for elaborate detail and concentrating on the simplification and generalization of the objects. He never attempts to depart from the real, either, and his main methods of constructing new perspectives include the juxtaposition of cool and warm colors and the bold overlapping of forms.
Cézanne was influenced by Impressionism-dominated painting at the time and was concerned with the effect of light on different textured surfaces, but he always maintained a focus on the structure and solidity of the object and eventually abandoned Impressionism. Whereas the Impressionists such as Renoir, Degas, or Monet fixed the temporary, momentary impression of a moving thing on canvas, Cézanne explored the representation of nature in a timeless and unchanging form.
