The entire composition of Last Judgment was a new experiment at the time, forming a rhythmic circular Christ-centered unity. Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint a giant altarpiece for the Sistine Chapel in 1534-1541. The resulting work is Last Judgment, depicting the second coming of Christ at the end of the world to deliver the final judgment on all humanity.
The fresco is divided into four parts: the angels of heaven at the top, Jesus Christ at the center, the crowd of people being judged below, and hell at the bottom. Jesus and the Virgin Mary are at the center of the picture, surrounded by saints and angels. Jesus looks down at the evil-doers and raises his right hand to represent those on his right ascending into heaven and his left hand down to represent those on his left descending into hell. This gesture also shows the wounds of his crucifixion, suggesting his resurrection. Next to him, the Virgin Mary turns her head to the one ascending into heaven, presenting a submissive gesture. The saints surround Jesus, except St. Peter, who holds the keys to heaven in his left hand, and St. John the Baptist, who is almost equal in size to Christ. The other saints cannot determine their final judgment and therefore show the suffering they have endured. In particular, the saint on the lower left of Jesus holds his skin in his hand, representing the punishment of flying. The face on the skin is usually considered Michelangelo's self-portrait.
In the upper left of the painting, a group of angels carries a huge cross, representing that Jesus had suffered from crucifixion. The angels show various gestures of exertion, suggesting the heaviness of the cross and the sorrow of Jesus' suffering. At the top right of the painting is a similar image to the one at the top left, where the angels support a thick stone pillar, representing that Jesus was once bound to a stone pillar to suffer the punishment of whipping. The two sides echo each other, focusing on the spirit of sacrifice and devotion of Jesus, who once suffered in the place of all mankind.
In the lower part of the painting, good and evil are judged by the resurrected Jesus, with the figures depicted on the left descending into heaven and the departed souls beaten into hell on the right. In the lower right corner, the boat on the water waving an oar at the souls is the god of the underworld, Charon, and the souls in the boat will cross the river to the various levels of hell.
In order to present such a serious cosmic event as Last Judgment, Michelangelo abandoned the perspective of a single point of view and adopted a magnificent view beyond the human world, spreading the different layers of the world up and down and presenting them side by side. Due to the arched rib structure of the building, it was not easy to complete the composition above. Michelangelo then painted crosses, pillars of shame, torture instruments, wingless angels holding crowns of thorns, and reeds and sponges in the two half-moon positions, symbolizing suffering and redemption.
