A representative work of French painter Paul Gauguin's late period, Two Tahitian Women, painted in 1899, measures 94 x 72 cm and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In Two Tahitian Women, two fit Tahitian women are half-naked, carrying fruit and flowers, and are returning from work in the orchard. They look very docile and simple under the green shade of the trees and the sunny orange sky in the background. The silhouettes of the two women appear in the background like bas-reliefs, showing that Gauguin used a style of cloisonnism rather than chiaroscuro. The single-line flat painting with slight dark shadows gives the figures a vigorous vitality and a solemn sense of relief. Gauguin adopted a solemn, smooth, tranquil, and decorative style and deliberately pursued a simple, clumsy structure of thick lines to express a strong sense of local customs and people.
Two Tahitian Women take a large area of flat color blocks, and in the strong sunlight, the brown ochre skin of the indigenous people and the bright red of the fruit, the apple green and dark black of the dress form a sharp contrast. The painting has brought the rough tribal life breath and endows the picture with a special elegant demeanor. The dignified women in Two Tahitian Women, the pure and vivid colors, and the primitive decorative style attracted and stimulated a group of young followers and Symbolist poets and influenced the creation of the Nabis and even the Fauvists.
Gauguin's theory of the composition and shape of forms was subordinate to the subject of expression. Although the color harmony is the same as in his previous works and the painting space is closed and limited as always, the relief-like projection of this three-dimensional figure has a certain relationship with the neoclassical demeanor of classical relief.
