Gérôme spent a lot of time traveling in the Middle East and North Africa and, as a result, created many paintings of things he saw or heard during his travels. He visited the Cairo Carpet Market courtyard in 1885 and created The Carpet Merchant in 1887 to show the scene he saw. This painting is also one of the most famous paintings of the Oriental carpet market.
In The Carpet Merchant, a magnificent Persian carpet catches the viewer's eye and is hung on the second-floor balcony so the customer can get a full view of the carpet. Three men are standing on the second-floor balcony, looking down at the courtyard. Various kinds of carpets are randomly placed on the floor. The barefooted businessman on the left is stepping on his carpet, waving his hands and talking to customers, and an assistant is standing next to him. On the right, six well-dressed customers are discussing, and a woman in a blue dress is coming out from the hallway.
The Carpet Merchant is full of strong oriental sentiment and an exotic atmosphere. From the composition and color, the painting still retains the rigor of the principles of Classicism, pays attention to the harmonious contrast of details, and pays special attention to the expression of texture in characters, costumes and architecture. The most remarkable thing is that the viewer can clearly see the details and designs of the carpets in the painting, which vividly and realistically reproduces the old handmade carpet trading scene and also shows the gradual opening up of the diversity of the handmade carpet market at the end of the 19th century.
