Paris Street - Rainy Weather was painted by Gustave Caillebotte in 1877, at a time when Paris was being redecorated, and the two different materials of the street in the painting reflect this transition from old to new. Caillebotte stunningly captured the expansive and stark modernity of Paris at the time, with life-size figures strolling in the foreground and wearing the latest fashions. In the background is a radially shaped square with multiple streets spreading out around it.
Paris Street - Rainy Weather depicts a typical Parisian intersection, with light rain falling, pedestrians carrying umbrellas, and a cold, somber atmosphere. Caillebotte visually and delicately depicted the Parisian street scene through the eyes of a pedestrian, bringing together people of all ages, genders, and professions in the light of a modern street. In the foreground of the painting, a man and a woman are walking down the sidewalk. The man in a suit and bowler hat holds an umbrella, and the woman next to him holds his arm as their eyes are drawn to one spot. The woman's face is covered with a black transparent veil, and she is wearing a bib coat and pearl earrings, all of which show her upper-class status. Behind them are workers with escalators in their hands and women in aprons suspected of being maids, who clearly belong to the working class.
Paris Street- Rainy Weather is too realistic for an Impressionist work with its interplay of light and shadow. Caillebotte paid particular attention to line, and the buildings, the ground, the umbrellas, the street lamps, and the figures are all delicately portrayed. At the same time, the subject matter of urban life, the outdoor light, and the "photographic" composition make this painting unmistakably impressionistic.
